What is Smart Landfilling?

Smart Landfilling is Tana’s landfill management concept that combines waste shredding, compaction, and material diversion to maximize landfill airspace and extend site lifespan.

In short, Smart Landfilling consists of four steps:

  1. Incoming waste is weighed and directed to sorting and recycling where applicable
  2. Divertable materials are removed before disposal
  3. Waste is shredded near the working face
  4. Shredded material is immediately compacted

The approach offers several benefits for landfill owners and operators. The practice of Smart Landfilling follows a smooth, efficient workflow that reduces fuel use, machine hours, and additional material handling. At the same time, it enables recycling and material recovery. Valuable materials, such as ferrous metals, can be separated and sold to scrap facilities, creating an additional revenue stream. Additionally, tires, wood, and green waste can be reused as alternative daily cover (ADC).

Furthermore, shredding waste before compaction improves overall landfill performance. It reduces bulky waste streams, such as C&D waste, mattresses, and mixed MSW, into a more uniform particle size, making them compact more evenly. As a result, waste density increases, landfill cells become more stable, and less airspace is consumed. This leads to higher compaction rates, more efficient use of landfill airspace, and a longer landfill’s life expectancy.
